d.painter

A Washington, DC & L.A. DJ, producer, and radio host whose open-format sets read like a passport stamped in rhythm.

Washington, DC–based DJ, producer, radio host, and writer d.painter has spent more than three decades building a reputation as one of the most versatile and respected selectors in American nightlife. Known for seamlessly blending house, hip-hop, soul, pop, reggae, disco, and global rhythms into dynamic, dancefloor-focused sets, his ability to move effortlessly between genres has become a defining characteristic of his career. As acclaimed music journalist Marcus Dowling, formerly of Mixmag, observed, his flexibility as a selector is one of his calling cards.

Raised on a soundtrack of ’80s pop and punk, ’90s hip-hop, house music, and reggae, d.painter (Dominic Painter) first emerged in Washington, DC’s vibrant music scene during the mid-1990s under his former alias, DJ Tru. He quickly became a fixture in the city’s nightlife, playing influential hip-hop events and sharing stages with artists including Jay-Z, The Fugees, and Redman. His reputation continued to grow through his work as a DJ, producer, and radio personality, eventually leading him to co-host, DJ, and produce three programs on Washington’s historic WPFW-FM beginning in 2005.

As his musical interests expanded beyond hip-hop into dance music, bass music, indie sounds, and international genres, he rebranded as d.painter and developed the open-format style that has become his signature — weaving classic disco and soul through contemporary house, hip-hop, pop, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms into sets that are both accessible and relentlessly danceable.

Following years of success in Washington, DC, d.painter relocated to Los Angeles, where he became a sought-after fixture in Hollywood. His LA résumé includes a five-year residency with the Los Angeles Dodgers as the official DJ for the VIP Dugout and Stadium Clubs at Dodger Stadium, and a six-year residency with Houston Hospitality across the group’s renowned Hollywood speakeasies.

His client list spans major brands, entertainment companies, sports franchises, and cultural institutions — Amazon Prime, HBO Films, Paramount Pictures, ABC, Comcast, YouTube, NYX Cosmetics, ColourPop, AEG, the LA Galaxy, and Arsenal Football Club among them. His production work has been featured on broadcasts including the Winter Olympics and the Emmy Awards, and he holds a writing credit on BROCKHAMPTON’s final studio album, Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine.

Today, d.painter continues to perform regularly while producing and hosting World Massive, a weekly global-music radio program on Los Angeles station KPFK. Now in its seventh year, the show reflects the same boundary-crossing philosophy that has defined his career. Currently based once again in Washington, DC, he remains dedicated to exploring the connections between music, culture, and community.
